Enhancing the labour market prospects of young girls and women in the West Bank

Timeframe: July 2011 – January 2012

Locations: West Bank

Donor/s: UNDP-Spain, ILO

“Enhancing the labour market prospects of young girls and women in the West Bank” means the development of the capacity of young girls and women by equipping them with new skills to support their participation in the labour market and strengthening the network of active young leaders with the skills to disseminate life and work skills through their communities.

project aimed to:

 To activate Sharek’s network of active young leaders through training and resource-building;
 To equip young Palestinian women in marginal areas with new skills and confidence to increase their livelihood potential, and access economic opportunities;
 To support young Palestinian women to access labour market opportunities.

The target group was young women between the age of 18-28 years, who were as also identified as being vulnerable to labour-market isolation due being from low income background, being unemployed or under-employed, and being highly subject to the realities of occupation because of proximity to checkpoints, settlements, and the apartheid wall.

Particular lessons learned

The project is illustrating some of the problems encountered by young women in marginalised communities in the West Bank, and in Palestine as a whole. The high unemployment rates have impacted young women disproportionately, as they are effected by particular lack of access to jobs and livelihood opportunities compounded by movement restrictions and lack of supplies.
